Laundries don’t need to be boring! Check out our top tips for designing a laundry area that's not only functional but also beautifully styled.
1. Select your appliances first
The size of your appliances will determine the layout, size and functionality of your laundry. For example, a front loader or top loader washer will change the design dynamic of the space. If you have a top loader, you won’t be able to stack appliances. These machines are also generally taller and deeper so factor that into your design.
2. Functionality is key
Consider adding a hanging rail and hanging nook, so you can dry your clothing inside. Don’t forget to factor in storage space for wall mounted appliances and low convenient power points for robot vacuum cleaner docks. A pull out ironing board is also very practical.
3. Storage
Never underestimate the power of storage in all different heights and sizes. Incorporate long storage with power points for wall hung appliances like vacuums. If you have the space, be sure to add two pull out hampers for dirty laundry, so you can split your whites and colours before washing day.
4. Dark Colour Palette
When designing with dark materials, the number one thing to consider is the fingerprint factor. How easy is the surface to wipe down?
5. Benchtop materials
Natural stone is a one-of-a-kind, show stopping stone, that will give you a beautiful edge detail without joins, but requires more long term care with sealing and cleaning, and generally at a higher price point. It definitely has its place, but it’s not for everyone, other options are porcelain or engineered stone.
6. Tiles
Consider your style first, there’s no point searching for tiles if you have no idea on the overall style you’re trying to achieve. Feature tiles are a great way to add that wow-factor, but due to sizing, styles and laying them in various directions, it can often cost more per sheet and more for your labour cost.
Consider this in your budget and use them in a smaller area of the laundry like the splashback.
7. Sink and tap selection
Consider the width and size of your sink. Will it impact having a laundry hamper? Does it allow for the washer and dryer? The size will impact your amount of bench space. I love a pull down function tap, so you can pull out the tap easily and use it to fill up buckets or clean easily.
8. Bench space
It’s important to factor in where you’re loading and unloading your washer and dryer, so you have adequate space for your basket to be on the bench.
